We're
all set for another round of our
Guess how many puppies (and whelp
date)
contest!
The
diva for this contest is Amore, age 4.
Here's some background info you might find useful...
In
her first three litters, she had:
- 4
puppies
- 4
puppies (ultrasound showed 5 or maybe 6 but only 4 were born)
- 3
puppies (only 2 survived)
Amore
came into heat in early February. She was in LH surge (a key hormonal precursor
to ovulation) on Thursday 16 Feb, ovulated most likely on Saturday 18 Feb, and
was bred on Monday 20 and Wednesday 22 Feb (prime breeding dates are 2-5 days post-ovulation).
The
scientists tell us that the whelp date is generally 63 days post-ovulation, no
matter what day the dog was actually bred. That's give or take 3 or so days. 63
days after Feb 18 would be April 21, so whelping will be around then - give or
take 3 or so days! For her second and third litters she whelped on day 63 and
day 64.
Amore's
first litter was delivered over the supper hour, between about 4:30 and 5:30pm.
Her second arrived in the wee hours of the morning, between about 2-4am (as
best I recall). Her third again came in the early evening, between 5:30 and
7:30pm.
So,
you are invited to submit a guess including the following:
-
number of puppies
-
date of whelping (birth)
-
time of birth of the first puppy
Amore
will have an ultrasound during the last week of March, so we will accept
guesses for the contest until Sunday March 25.
The person who guesses the correct number of puppies and has the date
and time of whelping closest to the actual date and time will win a prize:
a $10 gift
card to Tim Horton's! (Or if it's a child who wins, a $10 gift card to Toys R
Us).
Happy guessing!
