Happy birthday Amore!

Amore, aka Mo, turns EIGHT today!!

Mo is the matriarch of our whole breeding program. We got her at the age of 16 months, in whelp, from Urban Doodles in Calgary in June 2009. She was in part my daughter’s ninth birthday present (so now you can figure out how old my daughter will be this spring). From day one she has known she was my daugher’s dog, sleeping in her room, watching over her, keeping an eye on her when we would be out hiking or playing. She is a very maternal, caring and smart dog with a bit of a protective streak, so we could never have prospective puppy families visit before her pups turned six weeks and even then we had to watch her as she didn’t like strangers handling her pups. For all that, the pups from her that we’ve kept as breeders have been calm and pretty laid back (especially Galena!).

Mom gave us 15 pups in four litters, so she was never a big producer, but we loved her anyhow. She is now the family pet and matriarch of the pack. She is sometimes a bit jealous when Galena, Phoenix or Topaz have their pups and acts like she’d like to be the mom, but knows to keep her distance as they other moms don’t want her barging in (for all they accept humans, another dog is more threatening).

Born on Valentine’s Day, our Amore is indeed our love.

Happy eighth birthday Mo!!

No more pups!

This post is rather late in coming, seeing as all of Galena's pups went to their new homes in mid-January! This was actually the first time (out of 12 litters) that every single pup went to their new homes within a two-day period. It was kind of weird not having one or two left for an extra few days - but nice, at the same time!

We are happy to report that four of the pups stayed here in Ottawa, while the other two went to Toronto.

We are expecting Galena, Phoenix, Harmony and Topaz to go into heat sometime in March or April so it's on the horizon... We will for sure breed Galena for her last litter - most likely to Chino again. And the plan is to definitely breed Harmony for her first litter. Then it will depend on timing whether we breed Topaz or Phoenix - the goal is to minimize overlap, but have three litters this spring/summer as looking after dogs and pups will be my daughter's main summer job.

In the mantime, we are planning a doodle romp on Sunday March 6 - if you are thinking of getting a DragonRam puppy, contact me and we'd be happy to have you join us at a romp so you can meet all the great dogs!
